Senate Doesn’t Get It

When it comes to technology there is always the fear of privacy being disturbed. For Facebook, unfortunately a database of people’s personal information was accessed though an app called Cambridge Analytical. This access was claimed to be unauthorized by the CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Senate decided to call Mr. Zuckerberg to confirm that he had no knowledge of this attack but what came out of this privacy hack was more comedic than anything. Senate didn’t have even the most basic understanding on how technology like Facebook works.

Questions on the most basic functions of Facebook included inquiries on how Zuckerberg can make money from Facebook since it is a free site to use. The answer to that is obviously through companies paying for advertisement on Facebook. It was unclear to Senate how third party apps are able to gain access to Facebook profiles. It had to be explained that people can give access to third party apps in many situations, however this particular situation was different. Access to information was taken without permission, which is not allowed by Facebook. So what does this mean for the world that uses technology? Does it mean that people should be concerned who their information is being shared with? It means that privacy is at risk whenever people put their information online when they don’t understand the purpose. If you want a good laugh at Senate trying to understand technology check out the video below from CNN.
